About Joe Prater
Born in 1938 in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, of Choctaw Indian and English heritage, award winning artist Joe Prater was raised in Parsons, Kansas. Joe always knew he would be an artist! He started drawing with crayons, when he was about 5 years old. In school his favorite time was when he was drawing. He likes all media. This, probably comes from his Junior and High school art teacher Mrs. Zada Chase. In her classes the students were encouraged to explore and learn, to work in all media, including watercolor, oils, pastels and even the airbrush, along with pottery and sculpture.
After high school he enlisted in the US Air Force, and upon discharge decided to enter the Jr. College at Parsons, Kansas. Although he considers himself self-taught he has studied art at Parsons Junior College and later at Missouri Southern State University. Joe has studied with nationally known artists such as Bob Tommy, Joe Garcia, Adele Earnshaw, George Kontoupous, Hugh Walkinshaw and Jim Bray. Being primarily a transparent watercolorist, Joe works in other media, to convey his ideas about landscape, wildlife and southwestern scenes. “I don’t like to paint just one subject or genre all the time. If I get up feeling like I want paint a flower that’s what I paint or a steam engine or a buffalo” and I’ll do it abstract or impressionistic these are fun to do. He has worked as an artist in private business and in corporate settings for several years before setting out as a fine artist.
His artwork hangs in business settings, corporate offices and private collections across the country. His art has been used for the cover of two books by western writer Vernon Schmid” See “Vernonschmid.com”. Joe’s studio is located in Joplin, Missouri where he resides with his wife, Ruth of 47 years. Joe and Ruth have 3 grown sons Todd, Jeff and Tim.
